Addressing Misconceptions and Cultural Differences for Embedded Clinicians in Jails

Hosted by The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance, and the National Sheriffs’ Association

This field-wide virtual discussion will include presentations by a jail administrator and a clinician to discuss the misconceptions and cultural differences that occur when working in a correctional environment. The discussion will focus on developing partnerships based on mutual respect and shared core values, providing cross-training, and establishing joint communication between mental health and criminal justice professionals. Panelists will provide examples from the field to demonstrate how collaborative approaches can increase the overall safety in the facility and improve responses to people with mental health needs.
